Tarasova, Polina ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Žáčková, Magdalena (referee)
The aim of this work is to study the development of meaning of two concepts virtù and fortuna in Italian literature of 16th century and confront both concepts with the reality afterwards. The basis for the analysis are following works: political treatise Il Principe (The Prince) by Noccoló Machiavelli, moral treatise Il Cortegiano (The Courtier) by Baldassare Castiglione and autobiography La Vita (The Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini) by Benvenuto Cellini. This work is divided into five chapters. The second chapter is a short introduction to the whole work. In the third chapter is presented Niccolò Machiavelli's life and work which are followed by semantic analysis of the concepts virtù and fortuna in the text of The Prince. The fourth chapter is dedicated to Baldassare Castiglione's life, work and short analysis of the transformations that virtù and fortuna assume in text of The Courtier. In the fifth chapter is presented Benvenuto Cellini's life and work. Afterwards the concepts virtù and fortuna are studied in the context of an example of life and thinking of an actual person. The sixth and last chapter is a recapitulation. It contains confrontation and comparison of the meanings which studied terms assume in all three works and points out differences and similarities.
A study through political: An analysis of Machiavelli's political thought through the conceptual apparatus of Carl Schmitt
Kuchar, Jakub ; Kučera, Jan (advisor) ; Franěk, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor's thesis aims to enrich the interpretative discourse regarding Niccoló Machiavelli, by constructing a notion apparatus deduced from the works of Carl Schmitt. In this way, the author of the work hopes to provide a fresh perspective on the work, political thought and philosophy of Niccoló Machiavelli. Concepts discussed in this bachelor's thesis include: sovereign, exception with relation to norm, political unity, political power, enemy and the intensity of the conflict, which are linked to the interpretaive analysis of the work of Niccoló Machiavelli. The thesis also studies the interpretative discourse regarding Machaivelli in it self, as a mean for grounding the thesis, based on current theoretical approaches. It discovers a possibility of linkage between the two authors, provided the strict apparatus derived from Schmitt's political thought.
The Relationship between Purpose and Means in Philosophy and Politics
Bednář, Miloslav
Bednář confronts Machiavelli's understanding of the relationship between purpose and means in politics to Plato's concept of it as presented in the dialogue Gorgias and with current attempts to justify Machiavelli's concept of politics. Machiavelli's voluntaristic outline of politics and the resulting manipulative populism is neither democratism, nor a republican non-domination.
